Fire at Austin Energy Property Leads to Power Outage for Thousands in North Austin

A large fire broke out at an Austin Energy property on Thursday, September 1st, leaving thousands of customers without power in north Austin.

The fire started at around 6:30 PM at a substation located at 1201 Airport Boulevard. Austin Energy crews responded to the scene and were able to extinguish the fire, but not before it caused extensive damage to the substation.

The fire caused a power outage for approximately 10,000 customers in the north Austin area. Austin Energy crews worked throughout the night to restore power, and most customers had their power restored by Friday morning.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Austin Energy is asking customers to conserve energy as crews work to restore power to the remaining customers. Customers can conserve energy by turning off unnecessary lights and appliances, and by setting their thermostats to a higher temperature.

Here are some additional tips for conserving energy:

  • Turn off lights when you leave a room.
  • Unplug appliances and electronics when you're not using them.
  • Set your thermostat to a higher temperature in the summer and a lower temperature in the winter.
  • Use energy-efficient light bulbs.
  • Wash clothes in cold water and air-dry them.
