Mayorkas's path to leadership began at Loyola Marymount University, where he graduated with a J.D. degree. After a successful career as an attorney, he entered the realm of government, holding various positions within the Department of Justice.

In 2013, President Barack Obama nominated Mayorkas to serve as Director of Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), where he oversaw the implementation of immigration reforms. His tenure was marked by a commitment to fairness and efficiency in the immigration process.

With his wealth of experience in homeland security and immigration matters, Mayorkas was appointed by President Joe Biden as Secretary of Homeland Security in 2021. As the first Latino and immigrant to hold this position, he has brought a fresh perspective and a focus on diversity to the department.
