THURSTON COUNTY, Wash. - Thurston County Public Health and Social Services (PHSS) is reporting the first confirmed case of rabies in a bat in Thurston County this year. The bat was found in Olympia.
PHSS urges residents to take precautions to protect themselves and their pets from rabies. If you or your pet have had contact with a bat, you should contact your medical provider and PHSS immediately.
Rabies is a deadly virus that can be transmitted through the bite or scratch of an infected animal. Symptoms of rabies in humans include fever, headache, weakness, and confusion. If left untreated, rabies can lead to paralysis and death.
Pets that have not been vaccinated for rabies are at risk of contracting the virus if they come into contact with an infected animal. If your pet has had contact with a bat, you should contact your veterinarian immediately.
To protect yourself and your pets from rabies, PHSS recommends taking the following precautions:
- Avoid contact with bats and other wild animals.
- Vaccinate your pets against rabies.
- If you or your pet have had contact with a bat, contact your medical provider or PHSS immediately.
- Report any dead or sick bats to PHSS.
